today's class notes

  1. crude birth rate - number of births per thousand of the population 
  2. crude death rate - number of deaths per thousand of the population
  3. rate of natural increase - produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate 
  4. this gives us the annual natural growth rate (in percentage form for a country or region)
  5. net migration rate - the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year 
  6. an excess of persons entering a country is net immigration
  7. written as a positive number. example - canada has 5.65 migrants per 1,000 population 
  8. US - 3.62
  9. an excess of persons leaving the country is net emigration 
  10. written as a negative number. example - mexico has 3.11 migrants per 1,000 population. (it was -3.61 two years ago.
