Test Day

Today in class we took a test. I thought I did pretty well. There were some questions that were harder then other and now, thinking back on it, I probably should have made note cards to study. But, now I know for the future.

Today in class we finished the movie "slumdog millionare". Some people finished the movie last class but since a lot of people were absent we watched it more today. This was overall a really good movie that helped us to realize how much differently we live compared to many other cultures. It helps us to also realize how fortunate we are and how most plaes are no where near as fortunate as us. This movie ended with Jamal winning the 20 million rupees or however much he won. This movie has helped me to look at life in a different perspective.

Tuesday 25th

Today in class, we watched more of the movie. I think that this is a good movie to watch at this time of year with Thanksgiving right around the corner. This movie has helped me to realize that I need to be thankful for what I have and not worry about what I don't have. In America, we take things for granted and look more at what we don't have than what we actually have. In India these kids live in the filtiest places and still are grateful for the miserable life that they live. I feel terrible watching this. The kids watched their parents be killed and continue to live without parents. This movies just goes to show that culture is so much different and this movies shows how much differently kids grow up.

In class movie

Today in class, we watched a movie about how Indians grew up and indian culture. Some things that are different between their society and ours is that the kids there are so poor that they rumage around for money and tings in the trash to search for value in absolutely anything. Another thing that is different is that there is trash everywhere. Also, no people that are poor in the USA compare to the poorness of India. Also, in India in these attacks, there would be tons and tons of people killed. This was all because of clashes in religion. The police come into the croud everywhere and try to capture these kids. The polic abuse people and kill people and try to answeres.

American National Anthem

Lyrics: Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Test day

Today in class, we had a test. I thought that some questions were easy and some were hard. The hardest part of studying was remembering which types of governement belongs to which country. I think remembering the countries leaders was easy. I think I did okay. I am a bit worried because I tend to overthink the easy questions.

11.3.14

Today in class we worked more on our powerpoint. I think that we will defenitly be ready to present tomorrow. Once Alayna and I thought that we were finished we asked Mr. Schick to come over and look at our blog. He told us one thing that we needed to fix and we fixed it and then he posed several questions to us such as "what would make the US want to impeach Obama?" We answered these questions then made some more changes to our blog.

Today in class we worked more on our powerpoint presentation. I learned some new things about America and the government and Alayna and I went on the White House's website and signed some petitions.

tuesday october 28, 2014

Today in Human Geography, I worked on my google slideshow about America. I also talked to meredith on Facetime along with the rest of the class. Alayna and I think that we are finshed but we have to have Mr. Schick approve it. I have learned several things about the President and how we can get rid of him during the first two days of this quarter.

Monday, October 27, 2014

monday 27, 2014

Today in class, we did partner work on a country of our choice. I worked with Alayna and we worked on America. We had to make a slideshow that answered questions such as:
- What kind of government does this country have?
- What is the leader's name?
- If you wanted to overthrow or get rid of this president what could you do?
We made a slideshow answering these questions and then I went onto a White House Petition website and I signed some petitions about the country. One petition I signed was for Japan to stop killing dolpins. Another I signed was for patients traveling back from an area to be held in a hospital for 21 days until they are 100% clear of ebola and the doctors think and know this for a fact. I think that in this case, we would rather be safe than sorry. Just sending one person home from Africa to their home without ebola symptoms on that day could in the next few days spread to her entire family, and then to family friends and extended family. I think that this is the correct move.

friday october 24

Today in human geo we had a pop quiz. I was very upset about this because I hadn't gotten the change to study properly to get a good grade. I didn't do well on it at all, actually a shadow did better then me. I'm pretty sure my brain stopped working as soon as I looked at the questions. I am mostly upset because before the pop quiz, my grade was an 84 and then it went down to a 82. So even though it was originally bad, it dropped again. Next quarter, i'm hoping i learn how to study correctly so I can get an A in this class.

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Today in class, we talked about different fun facts about the leaders of the countries that we did research on. One fact that I said was that Enrique Pena Nieto is the second most wealthy man in all of Mexico. His wealth doesn't beat a drug dealer though, who is the number one person in wealth in Mexico. Another fact I found is that Xi Jinping is a very strong believer... the the communist party. Another fact I found is that Xi Jinping is kind of confused as to how he ended up being president because in many of his speeches, he often says "since many of you put me here..." One more fact about him is that he like Martin Luther King Jr. wrote an "I have a dream" speech.

Tuesday, October 21, 2014

Tuesday October 21, 2014

Today in class, we discussed several facts about different country's leaders. One fact in particular was that Enrique Pena Nueto had several wives and children and also had many affairs. This is strange, because you wouldn't expect someone like that to be the president. It was also stated that the only reason that Enrique Pena Nueto only won because of his looks and personality...not his political views. This would NEVER happen in America.

Today in Human Geogrpahy, we went over the homework from Friday becuase appparently a bunch of people had trouble on it. Some people didn't do the countries that we had to find out the information on, rather, they did countries of their chouce. We reviewed things about how to move the pictures on your blog, how to import pictures, and so much more. One blog in particular that we looked at was Luke's. Although I had already done my blog and done it correctly, I moved all of my pictures to the left hand side, so my blog looked more organized.

Today in class a few people had to take their tests that they missed on Friday. While the few people taking their tests took them, the rest of us just did homework or played on our computers. I went and talked to Mrs. Strawbridge. When I got back, I did my blog and did some other homework.

TEST

Today we had a test. I think I did pretty well. I think I got a grade in the high 80's or low 90's. Overall, the test was pretty easy. The only hard part was the part where we had to rush to get all of the answers for the first page. After, the test we just waited and talked a bit about the test.

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

October 8, 2014

Things to know for the test:
  • life expectancy
  • crude birth rate - total births per thousand
  • crude death rate - total deaths per thousand
  • developing nations
  • developed nations
  • rate of nature increase
  • net migration rate -
  • immigration - coming into the country
  • emigration - leaving the country
  • push forces - something that forces you to leave a country
  • pull forces - something that make you want to go to a country
  • total fertility rate
If you know the crude birth and death rate of the country you know ____________. (the rate of natural increase)
In japan, not as many people are being born anymore. There are more middle aged people and not as many old people and children.
Japan - population growth rate is a negative number.
Infrastructure - what a country needs in order to be connected to other parts of the world.
US - #1 in most airports, roads, shipping
How do you find out the rate of natural increase? ____________. (crude death rate minus the crude birth rate)

Today in class we talked about Spotify. This is a website we are going to be using to put music on a playlist that realtes to Human Geography. Mr. Schick is friends with a person doing a survey to find out some information having to do with Students using Spotify. We were given our code and most of us succesfully logged into Spotify. At the end of class, we were told that we could listen to music or do other homework and then at the end of class, Mr. Schick let us out a few minutes early.

Monday, October 6

Today in class we talked about several different things. One thing we talked about was the video we watched on Friday about Amercia not being the best country in the world. Another thing we talked about was freedom and hwo most women in other countries can't drive. Another thing we were asked is what is the best country in the world if we aren't? We talked about this and decided that maybe America isn't that bad. We talked about electricity. And then we discussed what could make our country better and this is what Mr. Schick thinks:

  1. Our country would be better if we had more than just two political parties.
and

     2. Our country would be better if we had more people voting and not just a small percent.

Friday, October 3, 2104

Today in class we watched a video called "The Newsroom, First Scene."
In this video, several things were discussed but one of the most important of these things brought up was a question asked by a young college aged girl. She asked the man "Why is the United States the best country in the world?" At first, he didn't respond, but then he did and furiously responded "IT'S NOT." He also stated that "the first step to solving a problem is recognizing that there is one." He stated why he didn't think the USA is the best, and became very upset and used some bad words. Next, after the video we discussed Ebola and how one person has it in Texas because he got it in Africa. After we discussed Ebola, Mr. Schick asked us "Do you think that the USA is the best country in the world, and if so, why?" We discussed the ups and downs of the US. One of the downs we discussed was that we have quite a few poor people. We talked about how most poor people are lazy and content with being in the situation they're in but how some poor people actually have mental issues and are incapable of leading a normal lifestyle. Some people also complained about Obama and how it's his fault that our country is failing and isn't the best. We also agreed that our country isn't as united as it used to be. Several people don't vote when it comes time to vote but they complain about who was elected. We all agreed that we have the right to vote when you turn 18 and then it's your responsibility to do so. Another thing that came up is that too many people complain and sit around instead of getting up and taking a stand for your beliefs. We debated about the ups and downs and voted on whether the US is indeed the best. We voted that it isn't and instead said that the best may be Japan or China because they have better politics and such. The only reason why we decided as a group that the US is better then China and Japan is because we have better and cleaner air.

9/30/14

Today in class we talked about population pyramids. We talked about the video we watched during yesterday's class. We discussed how different have different amounts of people grouped by age. Some countries we dicussed were Rwanda, Canada, and Japan. We also discussed the three phases countries go through which are pre-industraialization, industrialization, and post-industrialization. Lastly, we talked about technology and how technology is helping us to live longer.

September 29

Today in class we didn't have a teacher so we had to watch a video. The video was about the population in several areas and how it was predicted to grow or fall in the upcoming years. There was a link after the video where we could click. The page that it took us to showed the death's and birth's today and they were increasing every second. It was wierd that so many people are being born and dying every minute...So far this morning, ther have already been 132,780  babies born just today. The number of death's today is already 54,812 but is increasing at a slower rate then birth's. This shows that our population is changing every second.

9/26/14

Today in class we discussed the CIA worldfactbook website. We learned how to further navigate aorund the website and learned some new facts about the United States government and learned where we could find defenitions if we ever needed them and they had to do with the world. One fact I found interesting that is on the website is that the US in in debt for 300 billion dollars. Another fact I found interesting was that China educates more men then women. Another fact I found interesting was that Haiti's literacy rate is 48.7%. Also, the United States has a $52,000 average income for an adult, which is 14th in the world...and 15% of the population lives below the poverty line.

Today in human geography we went over the test that we took last week. I got an 84. I thought that I did much better than that, but now I have more of an idea as to what Mr. Schick's tests are like and what I need to study more. One mistake I made was not studying my journal of class ntoes and studying my blogs instead. I noticed that I didn't put the dates in my blog that I needed and that was a big mistake. Another thing I did wrong was not be detailed enough in the long answer questions. In the future, I know what I need to work on more and what I am already prepared for.

today's class notes

  1. crude birth rate - number of births per thousand of the population
  2. crude death rate - number of deaths per thousand of the population
  3. rate of natural increase - produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate
  4. this gives us the annual natural growth rate (in percentage form for a country or region)
  5. net migration rate - the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year
  6. an excess of persons entering a country is net immigration
  7. written as a positive number. example - canada has 5.65 migrants per 1,000 population
  8. US - 3.62
  9. an excess of persons leaving the country is net emigration
  10. written as a negative number. example - mexico has 3.11 migrants per 1,000 population. (it was -3.61 two years ago.

9/17/14

Today in Human Geography, we took a test. Before we took our test, Mr. Schick told us it was openbook and we could use our blogs on our computers. I think it was pretty easy. There was only one question I know for a fact I didn't have the answer to in my blog. All of the other facts I remembered discussing in class. I think I got somewhere between a 90-95. I couldn't remember one of the answers to the questions and then I went to answer one of the short answer questions and it was right there in my short answer question. To be honest, I thought the test was going to be much harder then it actually was. I actually enjoyed taking that test. It wasn't hard but it wasn't easy, and it made me really think.

9/16/14

During today's class, we studied for our test tomorrow. We used a website called "Quizlet" that had online flash cards. We made flashcards using yesterday's class notes and questions Mr. Schick told us were going to be on the test. I re-watched the Did You Know 3.0 and went over class notes from this week. Next, I re-visited the websites on globalization. We had a sub and we were allowed to quietly work in pairs. She also let us listen to music as we were working. I worked with Sammi and Alayna.

9/15/14

Today in Human Geography, we discussed the topics that are going to be on the test on Wednesday. On the test, there is going to be questions on Globalization, the "Did You Know 3.0" Video, A Message to Garcia, and other things we have covered in class such as the Spanish American war and the Baby Boom. We reviewed these topics and then went off topic and discussed technology now and what we think it's going to be in the near future. We discussed what kind of technology is being invented now and what is to come. We talked about new watches made by Apple that have your credit cards hooked up to them and how Mr. Schick thinks that they are going to be the new wallets. We talked about things such as toasters and microwaves and about what they used to be to what they now are. We also discussed how roads and cars are changing and modes of transportation are even changing too. Lastly, we talked about how how eventually people will most likely we able to fly places and go in cars that fly and such.

9/10/14

Today in class we discussed the video we watched yesterday and yesterday's homework. We talked about how China is going to be the number one English-speaking country and how english is the main language in business. We talked about A Message to Garcia a little bit and also discussed what the facts in the video meant to us and to our nation. We also discussed how one out of eight couples meet on an online dating website. This means that the world is mainly focussing on Technology and further explains how much we depend on it in our daily lifestyles. We also discussed how minimum wage has risen so much from only being 7.25 an hour to now being 10.10 an hour.

9/9/14

The three facts I picked out :
1) China will be the number one English Speaking country in the world.
2) the number of internet devices in 1984 was 1,000
3) during that 4 minute video, 67 babies were born in America.

My initial reaction to the video we watched was that wow, so much can change in so little time. In the course of 4 minutes, our population can expand so much. But there were so many facts that wowed me especially the technology ones.

The changes effect our lives because they are about how the world around us is constantly changing, affecting our lives. Between the changes in technology and the changes in people, the world isn't ever staying the same.

Technology plays a huge role in our daily lives because we depend on it. Everyone owns a laptop that is mandatory for school and everyone has a cell phone in which we are constantly on. Technology is the reason in which our nation isn't very good with social skills.

9/3/14

Today in Human Geography we discussed "A Message to Garcia" a message written during the spanish-american war in Cuba given to Rowan to deliver to Garcia. President McKinley had written this message. We learned that this message was a metaphor, and we learned that a metaphor is a comparison without "like" or "as". We also learned about voting and how everyone should vote. We learned that only three out of every five people will vote. We learned that most people that vote are older and if you don't vote then you don't have the right to complain about election results.

9/2/14

Today in Human Geography, we talked about blogging. A new thing we learned is that all of your blogs need to be on one main blog and not on a ton of different ones. Another thing we learned about was how to add links to our page. We also learned how to change the formatting. Mr. Schick challenge us to the ice bucket challenge and said that that was our homework. We talked about the ice bucket challenge and how important ALS is. Mr. Schick told us about his family reunions and how he comes from a big family. Another thing we talked about at the beginning of class was checking our grades online. Mr. Schick told us how to do this and we were able to check our human geography grade daily.

Day 3

Yesterday in Human Geography, we had our first official class. We learned about the people born around the year 2000, and how they are called millenials. Then we learned about how millenials are extremely lazy and self centered. We also learned about the baby boom and how that was a high increse of population around the time when world war two ended. This was around the years of 1945 - 1960. Around this time, this was when dishwashers, dryers, and toasters were being invented. We then read a letter that was in a magazine called "A Message to Garcia." This article was written about the time during the spanish american war which took place in Cuba. This article was mainly complaining about how people are so lazy that you can't count on them for anything.

5 things I can do to be a better person and succeed in high school :

  • pay attention in class.
  • find a quiet place to do my homework and study so that I don't get distacted.
  • not sit with people in class who can distract me easily.
  • keep my locker organized with all of my papers and books so that I don't forget them for cla

Day 2

Today in Human Geography we spent the class covering many things. First, since most of us did our blog wrong last night, Mr. Schick further explained our blogging problems. Then most of us were able to send him the URL to our blogging page so he could view our blogs. During the second half of class, we covered many topics. We went over the syllabus and Mr. Schick stressed that he does not give extra credit. He also told us about how he grades and his grading methods. We then discussed the materials you'll need for class and we looked at a calendar that lied out the entire semester. Today went very well by starting off the class by properly learning how to use our main homework website and learing his rules and expectations of and from us.

First Day of High School

I walked into John Carroll High School this morning for the first day of school. I looked around, and realized I was surrounded by so many people. I was used to walking into school only to see my eighth grade class of 36 students whom I had gone to school with since Pre-K. Now I have to get used to walking into a high school with almost seven hundred students, most of them being strangers.

There are several differences between John Carroll and Harford Day. One major difference is the size of classes. At Harford Day, there were about 15-18 students in a classroom. At John Carroll, there were classes with 20 students. One class I was in had 30 students. Another difference between John Carroll and Harford Day is that on the lockers, there are locks. Learning how to unlock a lock was a very difficult process that I finally picked up today.

The teachers at John Carroll are very different from the teachers at Harford Day. Although at Harford Day we had lots of freedom, at John Carroll we have more. We have off mods where we don't have to be in a classroom and we can be in the cafeteria or library, without a teacher sitting in front of us giving us work to do. The teachers at John Carroll are also more strict and expect the  best out of students. At Harford Day the teachers expected the most out of students but I feel as though the teachers at John Carroll want more then the best out of the students.

And lastly, one of the most important things about school is much different. The grading scale is different.  At Harford Day, a failing grade was considered a 59 or below and at John Carroll a failing grade is a 70 or below.

Overall, my first day of high school was a success. I met several new students and teachers, and was introduced to several new subjects.

A goal I have at John Carroll that I have and I'm hoping to achieve is to make first honors. I know this will be hard but with proper dedication and hard work I think I can achieve it.
